Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have this bike?
Don't know; can you? Any bike here will cost you $0, but please do not ask for more than two per year. All you need to contribute is some time: first in earning the bike, and then in repairing it (about 8-hours total) See the Eab Executive Summary and get registered; we waive this requirement only for toddlers and certain trade-ins.
Can I have these bar-ends/pumps/pegs/pedals/<insert any part here>?
Parts and accessories are also free, but within reason (and excluding new cables/casings cut from the reel). Please be considerate in your choices, as repair work and Earn-a-bike projects are more deserving-of-the-bling. Ask first, rather than just stealing something; and bring your bike, to show us where it's goin'.
Can I trade in my bike for a more <comfortable/suitable/snazzy> one?
Yes, but only if you got it through Earn-a-bike, and it wasn't the result of a prior trade-in deal that we made. You will have to follow the Earn-a-bike procedure, again; however, we won't count this toward your two-per-year limit. Furthermore, we'll give (credit) you 'value' points based on the condition of your trade-in (so, if it is fully-operational, or at least better than your next choice, you owe us zero shop time).
My bike got stolen; can I Earn-anotha-bike?
We are not without compassion, but if you're past your yearly limit, you had better bring a good story. At minimum, you will in any case be asked to show us a bike-lock.
I wanna get another bike, but this one's for my <friend/cousin/brother/sister>
Where is this person? they need to be here, to earn their bike. No one is saying you can't help, but in interest of fairness, we need to hear from the intended recipients. Exceptions to this rule are only made for established charitable organizations and non-profits.
How much money `you get paid to work here?
Nothing, this is a volunteer organization; we work solely by community contributions and donations, so please be courteous to the volunteers. Contribute <knowledge/money/parts/tools> when you can. Put tools back where you got them, and clean up after yourself.
Why don’t you let me hang out here?
It is not our general policy to exclude anyone; that would be against our mission. Thus it is also against our mission to allow anyone to be offensive or exclusionary to others here. Simply put, you must be working on something bike-related in order to be at the shop. When you arrive, next time, ask a volunteer what you can do to help.
