here's some beautiful thoughts from our resident cycling guru adrian hands:
Why We Tour

Pick a region to which you have no reason to go. Go there.

After a full day of cycling, cycle on into the night. After midnight, sailing along through unknown territory you get positively giddy. You're on your own then, feeling freedom more than at any other point in life. NOBODY knows exactly where you are. Nobody expects or even wants anything from you. You have no obligations. Your needs have been pared down to the primordial minimum necessary to sustain life: food, and water (and you're looking for a way to escape those too). No longer a twenty-first century man, you no longer have 21st century needs, nor 21st century obligations. The commercial consumer world offers nothing you want--that junk is all dead weight to you now, better off without it. With several hundred miles between you and your last "known" whereabouts, you've slipped the radar and totally escaped the system--in the wrong place at the wrong time, untracked, unshackled and unfathomable--the world is your oyster. You're moving across the planet under your own power and guidance, seeing things you weren't expected to see, breathing air not intended for you to breathe.

Check this out--Biff Frederikson says:

> Whatever--it's an unusually mild winter afternoon here in Bratislava,
> with a warm breeze, so I am about to get on the bike and see if I can
> get to Vienna for a latte before dark!
Yet, Google maps says: ( http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Vienna+Austria&daddr=Bratislava+Slovakia )
> We could not calculate driving directions between Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia.
Nice.
